Brad Wenstrup (Republican – Ohio) introduced H.R. 1058 to include podiatrists within the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) definition of physician and increases their pay grade to match other VA physician compensations.

The bill was introduced in the House of Representatives on February 14, 2017 and submitted to the House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs. The bill was brought before the House on July 24, 2017 and passed with an amendment by voice vote. The bill was sent to the Senate on July 24, 2017.

The bill amends title 38 of the United States code to clarify the role of podiatrists in the Department of Veterans Affairs. The bill amends title 38 by adding a new section in Subchapter I of chapter 74 of title 38, U.S.C. The section indicates that the term physician includes a podiatrist as part of the definition. The change in definition will align the pay grade of a podiatrist with that of other physicians.

There were 12 Democrat and 11 Republican cosponsors.
